What is USC’s Role in the Swim With Mike Scholarship?

Our 40 Year Relationship

  • The Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern California in 1981 as a result of a successful fundraiser initiated by former USC National Championship Swimmer and USC employee, Ron Orr, to benefit his lifelong friend and three-time All American USC Swim Teammate, Mike Nyeholt, who was suddenly paralyzed in a motorcycle accident. The first swim-a-thon was created to raise funds to purchase a specially equipped van for Mike to allow him to continue to pursue his career.
  • The event was immensely successful, and funds raised exceeded the amount needed for Mike’s van. At Mike’s visionary suggestion, USC established the Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund whose mission would be to provide financial resources for advanced education that pave the way for physically challenged athletes to overcome their tragedies and realize their full potential for qualified USC students. In 2000 Swim With Mike Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund extended its scholarship support to applicants at other universities across the nation.
  • Over our 40 year history, USC has a been supportive partner in the growth and success of the Swim With Mike event and the Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund.
