In 1981 Mike Nyeholt broke his neck in a motorcycle accident, a moment that changed his life forever. Nyeholt was an elite level swimmer who went on to achieve All American status, world ranking and three NCAA Swimming team titles at USC. He graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration and Finance in 1978 and had started to build his career as an Institutional Sales Professional at the Capital Group Companies in Los Angeles.
Mike’s accident inspired Ron Orr to organize a “Swim-a-Thon” to raise money for an adapted van. Nyeholt recognized that his athletic background, the support of others and his degree and work experience helped him move on to the point where he could not only survive but thrive. His vision created, developed and sustained Swim With Mike and the Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund for more than 30 years, providing college scholarships to over 100 athletes who sustained injuries as he had. Mike serves as the Chairman of the Board of Swim With Mike and has personally raised more than $1 million dollars so far. In his professional life Mike has worked his way up the ladder to Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing for the Capital Group Companies, an international investment money management firm.
Mike continues to swim regularly and has swam more than 6000 laps at Swim With Mike events alone. In his very limited leisure hours he enjoys spectator sports, cheering on the Trojans and watching his horses race, as a member of Joyride Racing LLC.
“It’s my hope that Swim with Mike, and the Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund which it supports, will continue to grow and assist the many who suffer disabling accidents. In the near term, we hope to endow an Executive Directors position so that our vision and hope will outlive us all!”
