M.A. in Education/Counseling, Spring 2006
Keith Kitamura had big plans. As a senior in high school, he was looking forward to playing football and baseball at the University of Hawai’i. Then suddenly, his plans changed. During his senior year of high school, Keith was in a car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. While he has every right to be angry, Keith remains positive. He looks at the accident as a blessing in disguise. He has learned to be appreciative of his family and friends. Keith completed his bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education in math at the University of Hawai’i and thanks to the Swim With Mike scholarship, he completed his master’s degree in ED/Counseling at UH. He is currently a math teacher at his alma mater, Kapa’a High School on Kauai, where he also serves as the coordinator for the Peer Mediation Program which provides mediation services for students, teacher support and they also do a lot of volunteer work in the community. Keith has served as an assistant football coach and is currently an assistant baseball coach at Kapa’a High.
