Lorenzo Lopez
Lorenzo grew up playing a wide range of sports, including basketball, football, track, baseball, and soccer. Basketball was always his favorite, and many of his closest friendships were formed on the court. He began playing sports at a young age—starting t‑ball at four, playing soccer as a goalkeeper in elementary school, and spending countless hours shooting hoops in the driveway. Throughout middle and high school, athletics shaped his routine, community, and identity.
During the summer between his sophomore and junior year, he sustained a T5 SCI after hitting a telephone pole riding a four‑wheeler. He spent more than three months in the hospital and began a steadfast focus on recovery, which required balancing school, rehabilitation, and the emotional impact of losing the sports he loved. Despite missing six classes during junior year, he remained determined to stay on track academically.
He says this scholarship represents the struggles he’s pushed through since his injury and a big personal achievement educationally. This fall he’ll attend the University of Tennessee to study Economics and looks forward to making the most of his time there.
